According to a story released on 28 May 2003 by the Goddard Space Flight Center, a lucky break by the RHESSI satellite may lead to the secret of ultimate explosions. These explosions are caused by Gamma Rays and according to NASA, they are the most powerful explosions in the universe. The satellite made a chance observation and discovered that in these explosions, the Gamma Ray bursts are polarized. This was important because it indicated that intense magnetic fields may be involved with these bursts.

It seems that solar flares, which are tremendous explosions in the atmosphere of the Sun, release hugh amounts of magnetic energy. Gamma Ray bursts are remote flashes of gamma-ray light that pop off about once a day randomly in the sky, briefly shining as bright as a million trillion suns. Another source for Gamma Rays are some exploding stars. This happens in some Super Nova. Scientists feel that magnetic forces are driving both solar flares and Gamma Ray bursts. But could it be that the Gamma Ray bursts are feeding off of the released magnetic energy in the solar flares? Dr. Steven Boggs, assistant professor of physics, states interprets the measurements to mean that the burst originates from a region of highly structured magnetic fields, stronger than the fields at the surface of a neutron star - until now, the strongest magnetic fields observed in the universe.

Now this is strictly my opinion but if someday we figure out how to generate magnetic fields powerful enough, we might be able to create some sort of Gamma Ray Burst Bomb. Imagine a weapon powerful enough to easily destroy planets. This weapon would make a nuke seem like a toy. This is not to say that a weapon of this nature might be perfect for destroying incoming asteroids or meteors. But would it be used only for peaceful protection of the earth? Knowing the history of the human race, I would sadly have to say no. Let us be glad that there is probably no way to generate a magnetic field strong enough for testing Gamma Ray explosions.

What really worries me is the fact that we scientists envisioned the Hydrogen Bomb they couldn't figure out how to set it off. This seems like a similar problem to developing a Gamma Ray bomb. The problem was solved by using an Atomic bomb as a trigger. Lets just hope that you can't set off a Gamma Ray bomb using a Hydrogen bomb as a trigger.
