Medicine And War
There are all kinds of drugs out there, I am not talking about the illegal kind, although they too will enter into what I am about to tell you. What I am really talking about are the myriad of prescription and nonprescription drugs that are available and all the different types of drugs that were available even a hundred years ago.You would think that when a doctor prescribes a drug for a problem that you have, he would note the side effects and monitor them you for them, so that if you begin to exhibit any of them he can take you off of the drug. This does not always happen however and I have seen this first hand myself. A person that I knew was put on a drug for an illness that he had and it changed his personality completely. This person was never the quiet type, but neither was he nasty and un thoughtful. Once he was on the new drug that was prescribed, he became unbearable. People that worked for him or years, couldn't stand him anymore and some of them were even thinking about getting a different job. I remember one of them coming to me for advice and I told him that this was not what the person was usually like, there must be something wrong. It turned out that his family went back to the doctor with him and insisted that his medication be changed. Once this happened he reverted back to his old self. What if someone in a position of great power is put on medication and has a complete character change, might he not be dangerous? If he is in a national position, such as the leader of a country, could he even cause strained relations or a war with other countries? Just imagine somebody that ready has severe character flaws being put on a medication that makes him much worse than he normally is. Could this have happened with any of the leaders of countries that might have lived within the last 100 years or so? Roosevelt, the president of the United States was said to be on different types of medication, because he was fighting his polio. Many people at the time did not even realize that he was ill. He would get up and make little movements while being in the excruciating pain. This was done so that the people would not realize he was sick. When the war started in Europe, many people said that Roosevelt couldn't wait to get into it on the side of England and the allies. Even Winston Churchill remarked on this fact. Was this really Roosevelt acting or was he in some sort of medicine induced sur realism? Maybe a better case in point, was Adolph Hitler. There is much documentation out there that shows that Hitler was a hypochondriac. Maybe he had good reason to be? It is said that he was afflicted with an extremely painful and embarrassing condition. For almost his entire life, he had terrible stomach problems which caused him to have massive amounts of gas. You can imagine how embarrassing this would have been to him when he met with other world leaders and his subordinates. Even his doctor commented that in all his years in the medical profession, he had never seen such a bad case. Sometimes it was so bad that he doubled over in pain after eating and then you can imagine what would happen. If it wasn't for the fact that he was the Fuhrer, the feared leader of Nazi Germany, he would have certainly cleared the room out. So what does someone do who has this type of problem? In Hitler's case, he found a doctor that he had a lot of faith in. It is said that as Hitler aged his problem got worse. Hitler had put a lot of time into reading up on his problem, but with no satisfactory results. He even gave up eating meat, but this seemed to make things even worse. It is odd to imagine a more embarrassing problem for someone that is in the world spotlight. From what I have read about Hitler's doctor, it seems he was considered either a bit crazy or incompetent by many of his peers. This did not stop Hitler from believing in him, maybe it was the fact that Hitler was a bit crazy himself that prompted him to use this doctor in the first place. Dr. Theo Morell was the name of Hitler's private physician. I remember when I was a child, there was a doctor that many of the people in the neighborhood swore by. I was very young when I was taken to him for the first time, maybe eight years old or so, but even at that tender age I realized that this doctor was a quack. I remember him handing me a blue florescent light tube and telling me to hold it while he turned the light on, because it would help me with my problem. While Dr. Morell didn't seem to go that far he did do things that seemed strange or ethical, even for a Nazi doctor. Maybe Hitler should have realized that this doctor had a problem when he first met him , since he was extremely overweight and had tremendous bad breath. I know that this would have been a tip off for me, because if a doctor does not care about himself, how can you expect him to care about you? it turned out that when Hitler first went to this doctor, he was able to give him temporary relief from his stomach problems and from that point on Hitler was hooked. Dr. Theodore Morell, Hitler's Personal Doctor (Some spell it Theodor
Morell) Dr. Morell began to give Hitler anti-gas pills. The problem with these pills was that Hitler used to eat them like candy and would take a dozen to a dozen and a half in a day. The pills themselves contained not only a small amount of strychnine, but also another drug that causes violent mood swings. Every morning Hitler was given an injection that was said to have the side effect of making his mood swings even worse. Dr. Morell was also administering eye drops to Hitler that contained about 10% cocaine. You just have to wonder how anyone could remain sane and stable under such a barrage of drugs. Besides the drugs that I have told you about, their were dozens of different types of vitamins and supplements that he was ordered to take. Wouldn't it be something if this was the reason that he started World War II, the reason being that he was totally out of his mind from all of the drugs he was taking? Don't get me wrong I am not saying that he was not responsible for his actions, but I am saying that just maybe he was in such a drug induced cloud that he might not have realized the ramifications of his actions. It is sort of like what happens to some people when they drink too much alcohol. I call that the false bravery syndrome. This is where they think that they can beat up everybody in the room and yet they can hardly stand up. While Hitler may have been able to stand up and walk around seemingly normally, his brain might have been experiencing drug-induced false bravery. Many people believed that Hitler had become a drug addict by the end of the war. Some based this on the fact that he had quite a few needle marks on his arm and was experiencing traumas. Actually the needle marks were caused by Dr. Morell continuously giving him injections. It got so bad that other doctors recommend to Hitler that he dismiss Morell, but instead Hitler dismissed them. .In his own crazy way, Dr. Morell was completely devoted to Hitler and believed that he was doing the right thing. The funny part of all this is that maybe someday history will show that Dr. Morell himself was suffering from some sort of mental illness. I know of some cases where doctors and dentists were stricken with mental disease. There is probably nothing worse than having this type of person treat you. When they think they are doing the correct thing to help you, they are doing bizarre things to your body. It just might turn out that the guy responsible for World War II was Dr. Morell. |
