Things happen during wartime that sometimes seem to be unexplainable. It seems that the only answer in some of these cases is divine providence. Some of you out there don't believe in such things, yet some of these happenings can have no other explanation. For example the crew of one particular bomber were in dire straits during a particular harrowing day in World War II. Their plane was completely out of control and it was on fire. Enemy fighters were swarming all over it, firing their red hot bullets into the falling eagle. The fire was raging out of control when the pilot ordered everyone that was left from the crew to parachute out. They didn't need to be told twice. Out they went but when it got to the last man, he had no chute. It seems the fire had consumed it. What could he do? If he stayed with the plane he would either burn to death, get shot and die or die in the crash. He decided to jump. The plane was at an altitude of about 10,000 feet at the time. Down he tumbled, knowing that he would never see his family again. As the ground began to grow bigger and bigger he assumed the position for a perfect parachute landing. He hit the ground rolling, breaking both of his ankles but he lived. Could this be anything other than a miracle? Experts who heard the story at the time stated that his form was so perfect on landing that it saved his life, but they didn't really believe this. Think of this, after something has been falling for only 10 seconds it has already reached 98 miles per hour. It has been determined that a penny dropped from a very high building will reach a speed of about 230 miles per hour before crashing into the ground. The rate of acceleration of a falling object doesn't depend on it's weight. I don't know how fast a human would hit the Earth from that height, but believe me when I tell you it would be extremely fast and crushing. Now I am not saying that strange things don't happenn. but sometimes they are so strange and unbelievable that one has to wonder. I personally know about a very strange event that seems almost impossible. Two people I know were celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary. They decided to look at the photos of a vacation that had been taken in Hawaii many years ago. They had seen the photos before, but wanted to see them again. When they were perusing them again, they found someone in the background of one of the photos that they couldn't believe. There was their son in law on the beach. This in itself may not have been too amazing, but the fact that this happened many years before their daughter had met him, made this a very weird event, indeed. It turned out he had been in the U.S. Navy and was on leave at the time in Hawaii. During the war between Israel and the Arab states in 1967 a Catholic journalist was reporting from the front lines. The battle was blazing hot and furious and at it's height, a wounded Israeli soldier ran into the area where the reporter was. He was mortally wounded with his guts hanging out. The reporter tried to comfort him but he knew that the soldier would soon die. The soldier dropped to the ground and called out for God to heal him. He stated that he knew that God could heal any wound. As he lay on the ground he cried out and rolled around in pain. The reporter watched, but he couldn't believe what happened next. The formerly wounded soldier jumped up and his wound was completely healed. When the journalist related to another what he had seen, he stated, “I am a Catholic and I am suppose to believe in miracles but had never seen one. That day, I saw one with my own eyes that was a true miracle!” . In Iraq there was a Sergeant connected with the 507th Maintenance Company that is convinced that his live was saved by a miracle. He was in a small convoy that was ambushed. Everything the enemy had was thrown at them. He received a severe leg injury but it was either fight or die and he was sure he wouldn't make it anyway. They were just too outnumbered and out gunned. He dragged any weapons he could find back under his truck along with several other wounded soldiers. The vicious fight lasted for over an hour. How he and a few others survived this onslaught had to be a miracle, according to the sergeant. The details of this battle seem to bear out his reasoning, the Americans should have been overrun in a few minutes, given the forces against them. Of course the bible is replete with war time miracles. Many people dismiss these as being fiction. They used to say that these places that were talked about didn't even exist. Then something happened, we began to discover many places that were in the bible did exist, then we discovered that we found proof that some of the things talked about did happen. An example of this happened when the collapsed walls of Jericho were found. Now there is a chance that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah may have been found. The story I am about to tell you may not seem like a miracle to you, but to those that were saved it certainly was. It was Christmas Eve in 1950 when 14,000 terrified Koreans huddled on the sea shore. They were all scared for their lives as the North Korean army was heading their way. The call went out to all ships in the area and Captain Leonard P. LaRue was on his freighter when he heard it. The freighter was designed to haul 12 passengers and 9,000 tons of cargo. The ship was the Meredith Victory. It was owned by Moore-McCormack but attached to the military. The next thing to happen was similar to the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Where Christ never ran out of food to distribute, LaRue never ran out of room. Somehow he managed to get all 14,000 people on his ship and transport them safely out of the area. Captain LaRue later became a Catholic Monk. Well as they say, the Lord works in mysterious ways |
