Nature vs Man

Sometimes the things that we take for granted can turn out to be deadly. These may be things we grew up with or near and just took for granted or they may be things of great beauty and serenity. They can also be places that we depended on for food or materials. By now I am sure you would be wondering what I am talking about if it were not for the heading on this page that states "KILLER LAKES".

One of these places is lake Nyos. It is located in Cameroon. This lake is a true killer having killed over 1700 people, and you could have been up to 25 km away and still died. The silent killer is actually under the lake. It is CO2. Great amounts of this stuff exploded out through the lake in 1986 to do its deadly deed. The French have watched the lake since 1990 and have installed pipes to slowly release the gas and prevent an explosion and resulting carnage.

You would think that one lake like this would be it for a country the size of Cameroon, but it isn't. Lake Monoun is also in Cameroon and had exploded with CO2 two years earlier and killed 37 people.

What has been going on, on the road between the two Russian cities of Adler and Krasnaya Polyana. Rock slides are claiming more and more lives and no reason can be found for these tragedies. Many drivers say that they are now afraid to travel the area. It seems that when a car is on the road rocks come down. The strange part of the tale is that several times police sealed off the road and stationed themselves there. During this period of time there were no slides. Vladimir Tkach is a hunter with much experience. He says that the Caucasian Bear hunts cows by sitting up in the mountains and waiting for a cow to appear then rolls rocks down on it. He says he saw bears pushing rocks down on trucks. No other reason has been found for the slides.

When the US Submarine "Connecticut" partially surfaced between the North and Alaska in an ice pack it was attacked by a Polar Bear. The bear tried to chew the rudder and out of frustration kept banging it with its paws. The bear was able to cause minor damage to the boat but all inside returned safely to base.

There is a lake in Texas named Whitney Lake. The lake is littered with cars. Police have removed dozens of cars from the bottom but have yet to find anyone in any of them. People near that area state they have seen UFOs near the lake and when they take off they leave burn spots on the ground.
