Urban Legends have become a very hot topic of late. As many of us know there is even a tv show devoted to the topic. There are way more of these legends than I realized existed. Lets take a look at some of the more interesting ones.

Gangster Clyde Barrow who tooled around in a Ford, sent a letter of thank you to the Ford Motor Company. This is one of those strange legends that can not be either proved or disproved.

In the late 1800s the bank was broken at the Monte Carlo Casino. This is a true fact, a man from Britain did it.

Never take a rock from an Hawaiian beach because it will bring you bad luck. Many tourists who have taken rocks, have returned them to the Hawaiian beaches in hope of regaining some good luck.

Typhoid Mary was responsible for thousands of deaths. This isn't true, thought she was responsible for a little more than 30.

A woman was said to have killed her husband by sitting on him during an argument and crushing him. This might be true there is no way to verify or disapprove it. The facts are that the woman in question weighed about double her husband and did exert an enourmous amount of pressure when she sat on his chest. She had sat on him for about 10 minutes or a little less.

A drawing of Humphrey Bogart was the model for the drawing of the Gerber baby. This is utter rubbish. It came about because his baby photo was used in advertising but not for Gerber.

Iron Eyes Cody is an indian. False, he played an indian but was not of indian ancestry.

Here is one of my favorite urban legends, Clint Eastwood is the son of Stan Laurel. It isn't true, but for some reason, it is funny.

Jane Mansfield was decapitated when killed in a car crash. This is a very popular Urban Legend. The car she was in crashed into the back of a truck and slid under it and she did lose a piece off the top of her head but she was not decapitated.

The three students that created The Blair Witch Project, disappeared. False. The students are alive and well and have given interviews.

After you cut or shave your hair, it grows back thicker. Oh if this were only true.

Never swallow your chewing gum because it will take years to pass through you body. If this were true I wouldn't have made it to adulthood.

Here is one of the most common urban legends. Saltpeter is put into the food of men in the military. It was not saltpeter in the food but strenuous training and pressure that made military men believe this.

Airport security gave a man a hard time who was carrying the Medal of Honor with him. Unfortunately this is true. The man was the former governor of South Dakota and was carrying the Medal with him for his speech before the cadets at the U.S. Military Academy. He did have other items that were deemed dangerous also. One was a nail file, which hadn't been banned yet and a bullet which was a trophy and was a crazy thing to carry on a plane. But the medal was considered dangerous because it resembled a throwing star which is a Marshall arts weapon.

ManBeef is a company that sells human meat. Thank goodness that this is false. The ManBeef website is a hoax.

NASA in calculating time has found a lost day in the past. This is not true but is always circulating just the same.

When the Titanic was built a worker was entombed inside by mistake and killed. We often hear of people being trapped in structures of all different kinds when they are built. In the case of the Titanic it just wasn't true, but was true in some other cases. A ship named the Great Eastern was launched in the late 1850s. She was a huge ship, much bigger than any other ship built up to that time. When she was finally scrapped, it was said that the skeleton of a worker had been found sealed between her double hulls.

Bathtubs were not popular in 1850s America because people thought that baths were unhealthy. This is untrue but was based on an article that had been published in a newspaper. The article was pure fiction.

The Boston Strangler was honored by the Texas Legislature. This is true. A bill was introduced by a legislator that wanted to prove that bills were often passed in Texas without being read. He was right.

A woman just came out of a shower and was still unclothed when the front bell rang. She called through the door, who is it? The blind man was the answer. So she got her purse and took out a dollar to give him and opened the door. At that point he grinned and she said, Oh no you can see and he said sure can, where do you want these blinds? No one knows if this is true or not.

So much for urban legends for today.
