Strange |
It is an amazing thing, but as you get older, you begin to realize that the human body, which includes the human brain, is capable of far more than anyone would suspect. Sometimes it takes stress to bring this out, and sometimes it takes not only stress but life threatening stress. That kind of stress may not be caused by your own life being threatened, it can also be caused by the threatening of lives of those that are dear to you. In extreme situations people have lifted cars off of other people. How can this be? Anyone who has tried to lift a car knows that the average person just can't lift a car. Even weight lifters may not be able to lift them, yet skinny little people have done this just fine. So how is this possible? Scientists have stated that our bodies have a section of the nervous system that is devoted to emergencies. According to some doctors, if the person sees a situation that causes them to panic, the heart can beat faster, they will breathe faster and more blood and oxygen along with energy, gets to the muscles. But more than this happens. Some systems seem to be shut off. Digestion is shut off and blood flow from the skin is diverted to prevent blood loss. Natural opiates are released to relieve pain. Adrenalin, noradenalin and cortisol are released. Perception of time can change and you can feel that a few seconds are minutes or that several seconds are only one second. All the bodies systems are optimized. Your body will be performing at the extreme level that it is capable of. You can still get injured performing these incredible feats of strength but you might not notice the pain until the event is over. But can everyone, under the right conditions, perform these feats? Scientists don't think so. They are not exactly sure why some can and some can't but they think that genetics may play some possible role in all this. It is even believed that during extreme emergencies, the rational portion of the brain is turned off and you operate strictly on emotion or instinct. It is sort of being put into a primeval mode. An amazing feat of strength occurred when a dog was trapped inside a burning van. The dog belonged to a little boy who saw the dog at the van's window. He ran to the van before anyone could catch him and ripped the door off the vehicle with his bare hands. The little boy was only two years old. He pulled the door so hard that it was torn off the hinges and came completely off the truck and fell to the ground. A man in Denver was changing the transmission in his car. He was under it and the car was jacked up. Suddenly the car fell on his chest. There was a group of children watching him. They ranged in age from 8 to 13 years old. There were four boys and a girl in the group. The group had one 13 years old, one 10 year old, two 9 year olds and an 8 year old. They ran to him and lifted the car off of him. When one of the youngsters was asked later where he got his strength from, he replied, "I drink milk." How strong are we really? I would like to answer this question by saying that Chimpanzees are extremely strong animals. They can rip the arm right off a human in a second if they are so inclined. Their muscles and the muscles of a human are very similar yet the average human is far weaker than a chimp. Many scientists attribute this to us not realizing how strong we really are. They say that evolution has focused more on brain power in our case, with muscle power put on the back burner, so to speak. They say it is there but we just don't believe it. They also state that young children are much stronger for their size than adults because they don't realize yet that they aren't. I am not a scientist but I have my own theory on this. I think we use more of our body's energy to power our brains than do animals. If you take two light bulbs, one running at 20 watts and one running at 100 watts, the bigger bulb needs more electricity to run. I think our brains run at more wattage than an animals. so we need more energy to power them and there is only so much energy in a body, so the increased consumption of energy for our brains had to come from somewhere and it came at the expense of our muscles which we no longer needed to battle the other animals. This could also mean that early man was far more stronger than we are today. Sometimes extreme strength can be demonstrated by the mentally disturbed. I remember one event where the police needed to put a boy of about 14 years of age on a small elevator to bring him up to the holding area. The boy was about 110 pounds in weight and had just stretched out his arms. The policemen, there were several, were all big men with the lightest being about 220 pounds and about 6 feet tall. First, one of the guys tried to fold the boy's arms down but he couldn't believe that he was unable to do it. He asked for help and now there were three of these huge guys trying to unsuccessfully bend the boy's arms down so he could fit in the elevator. I think they finally had to pick him up and turn him sideways to get him in. This was a truly amazing feat of strength on the boy's part but he seemed to be in some sort of cationic state. A man that had been terrorizing a neighbor had been put into a cell that contained another prisoner. He decided to strangle the man to death. A correction officer saw what was happening and called for help. The first thing the two officers did was spray mace in the face of the strangler but to no avail. Next they tried to loosen his grip, but couldn't. Then they began to beat on his arms with clubs but he wouldn't let go. More officers joined in and yet he still wouldn't release his grip. The beating went on for a good 20 minutes which seems totally impossible. Finally the strangler had a heart attack and died. This was a demonstration of the utmost in super human strength. There is no doubt in my mind that the strangler was either very high on drugs or had a mental disorder. There are a few stories where hikers were out in the woods and large boulders rolled on them and they were lifted off by another person. So do we, as humans, have some sort of untapped physical strength? Well there is no denying the fact that we might just have that strength and in times of stress, some of us are able to use it. |
