Strange Movies

Have you ever gone to a movie and thought to yourself, this was one strange movie? Some movies are so strange that you may not even be able to tell whether you liked them or not. Other strange movies are remarkably good. I find nothing wrong with a movie being on the strange side, but when it gets down right silly then I object, unless it is a comedy. As for my taste in movies, it tends to lean toward scifi, westerns, action movies and a good gangster or war movie. But even a war movie can be strange, look at the first one on the list.

The Keep with Scott Glenn 1983 - Nazi soldiers invade an ancient keep in Romania only to be confronted with an alien from space. The alien is all powerful but another alien comes to the aid of the town's people and a pretty young professor's daughter. I thought it was good.

Sin City with Bruce Willis 2005 - Yep this movie certainly belongs on the list. Black and white with splashes of color, non human looking people and the ripping off of certain body parts along with ninja prostitutes make this a very unusual movie. Many that have seen it walked out before the end, but others said they liked it. Its a matter of taste.

The Ape with Boris Karloff 1940 - The good doctor was only tying to help a poor crippled girl walk, but his big mistake was wearing a gorilla skin suit and taking spinal fluid from people. They just don't make them like this anymore, thank goodness.

Memento with Christopher Nolan 2000 - The poor guy, his wife was murdered but he lost his long term memory and can only remember things for a little while. He has to leave himself notes so when he wakes up he will know certain things that happened. He also writes all over his body, if something is truly important it goes there. With all this weirdness going on we still have a very good movie.

Mondo Cane 1962 - This is a documentary of sorts, but it is a documentary of strange people and their actions and practices. It is truly a classic and quite interesting. One of the scenes in the film shows a tribe that lives in an isolated area in New Guinea and has only seen planes in the air. They have built a plane out of sticks and leaves and worship it.

Little Shop of Horrors 1960 and remake in 1986 - Rick Moranis was in the remake. A tale about a talking and singing plant that is guarded by a schnook. The plant eats people. Most people enjoyed the music and the film.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape with Johnny Depp 1993 - A very strange tale about a mother who weighs so much that she doesn't want to go out of the house or at times even come down the stairs. There was something about this film that just made you feel very uneasy. I am not saying it was the acting because it was superb as was the casting, it was the plot.

Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Depp 1990 - Mr. Depp seems to like strange movie rolls and this was the strangest of all. It was about a boy who had scissors for hands. Movies just don't get any stranger than this one. I didn't particularly like this movie but I know many people who did.

Hudson Hawk with Bruce Willis 1991 - A terrible movie with many strange contraptions and even a flight on a Leonardo DiVinci glider. Too strange, and truthfully, I didn't get it and neither did most people who were unfortunate enough to have seen this flick.

50 First Dates with Adam Sandler 2004 - Another movie about long term memory loss but this is a comedy. He likes her but every day she forgets who he is and he has to start over. Good comedy.

The Man With Two Brains with Steve Martin 1983 - I think the title says it all. This just shows you can have too much brain power.

The Thing With Two Heads with Ray Milland 1972 - Two heads are better than one, but not when they are on the same body.

Some of the ultra popular movies were also strange even though we don't think of them this way at first glance. Here are the movies that I am referring to:

The Matrix with Keanu Reeves 1999 - Think about this, machines are using humans as batteries. Not only that but they are keeping the humans in a sort of dream state where they think they are really living out their lives but what is really happening is that they are submerged in liquid in a vat.

The Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of the Ring with Elijah Wood 2001 - An ancient ring that corrupts all who carry it, well almost all, dwarf warriors, Elves, monster warriors and wizards. The movie is not only strange but it is almost like a video game in its composure. I am not saying that it wasn't good because it is a great movie. The next two sequels provide even more creatures.

I am sure that you can think of weird or strange movies that I didn't put on this list, there are quite a few more of them out there.
