What Comprises The Universe?

Photo Source: Clipart.com The existence of a negative universe is very popular in science fiction. How many times have we read or seen, that if a doorway opened between our positive universe and a negative one, anything that got through would be annihilated by the positive universe. Even more exact, they like to give the example of a person coming through and meeting his or her positive double and each annihilating the other. Is there any chance that such a negative universe could exist? Could we have doubles that exist in other universes that occupy different dimensions? Could time itself exist at different stages in different dimensions? If it did would every moment there ever was be acted out all at once in different places? This is a fascinating thought. If this were true, then time travel would have to be looked at differently. Right now we think of time travel as going to the past or into the future. If we were to believe in the theory that different time periods are all around us in different dimensions then we would have to think of time travel as a trip to a different dimension. This might make time travel easier and solve some of the problems that we now believe are associated with time travel. Can we take this a step further and assume that if time exists in different periods in different dimensions then there are also negative dimensions that match the time periods in the positive dimensions? Ouch, my head is beginning to hurt thinking about this. We know for sure that dimensions exist in the universe. There are three we are sure of, they are length, width and height. Time is thought to be the fourth dimension by many. So we know there are three dimensions and suspect that there are four, but could we be wrong? Why not, if we know that some dimensions exist then there may be others that haven't been discovered yet? If we weren't talking about dimensions but were talking about lands in the 10 th century and someone said he believed that there were more undiscovered lands he would have been right. I think we are in a similar position today, we are in the early centuries of space and time exploration. We are just starting to explore space and we are theorizing about time travel and dimensions. What we may find out, may completely change our way of thinking about our universe. For example, we may find out someday that not only do all these different dimensions exist but that they occupy the same space. Wouldn't it be something if we were surrounded by other beings and had no inkling of it? This really sounds fantastic, but this theory has been proposed a few times. If this were true than we would be walking right through each other but totally unaware of this fact. To be honest with you, I find this hard to accept, but I know that in science you must keep an open mind because almost anything is possible. After all, look at some of the things that have come about in the last 150 years that looked ridiculous on their face. The thought of radio was inconceivable to many scientists before it came about. They scoffed at the idea of radio waves traveling through the air and being converted back to sound. The same was true for flying. Balloons were common for at least 100 years before flight, but the idea of an airplane flying through the air that was heavier than air was not accepted by many. When we finally flew, it was said that we could never exceed the speed of sound. We all know that this was not true either. So what would be so unusual about scientists being wrong about the dimensional theory I have told you about? If one believes in God, and God created the universe, what makes us ever think that we could fully understand it? I think the answer to this argument is that if you believe in God, then you most likely believe that God created us, yet we are well on our way to understanding the human body and many say it is just a matter of time before we completely understand it. Therefore believing in God or not believing in God should not effect our understanding of the things around us. String theory, which is becoming very popular in scientific circles, predicts that there are other dimensions all around us but they are so small in comparison to our dimension that we can't readily see them. It also predicts that for every particle there is a matching particle. You see the string theory is really named the superstring theory and it predicts supersymmetry, which in this case means that if there is a particle there is also a superparticle, but no one has seen it yet. The important thing is that string theory does predict the existence of other dimensions. According to string theory the minimum amount of dimensions is 10. The problem here is that physicists can not picture them. The human brain just can't comprehend what these dimensions would be. Here is one of the problems: You are at the center of a hollow sphere. You are standing at a spot where every point on the surface of the sphere is equally distant from where you are. You want to move to another spot that is also equally distant from all points on the sphere's surface but there is no other spot available. That other spot is another dimension but we just can't comprehend it. There is something else that I haven't discussed yet that relates to other dimensions, it is parallel universes. Anyone who has seen the tv show Sliders would know exactly what I am referring to, but for those that haven't, a parallel universe would be a place where the exact same people live and events were almost the same. There could be millions of these universes. In one you may have attained a better job and in another, the American Indians may have beat the white man. Any outcome may have changed. It is even thought that if these parallel universes exist there would be at least as many as possible outcomes from the beginning of history. I think we could consider each parallel universe as a dimension but I am sure not everyone would agree with me on this. I guess we will have to wait for proof that other dimensions do exist before everyone will accept this theory. I don't know how others feel about this, but I have always looked forward to new discoveries. It is just possible that the narrow view that we now possess of the universe is entirely wrong. |
