Is The Earth Doomed?

Stephen Hawking is one of the most, or the most, brilliant scientist alive today. The poor man is in terrible shape, being not only wheel chair bound, but being practically incapable of movement of any kind. This has not stopped this brave individual from using his brain and use it he has. So when this super smart person talks, everyone listens to what he has to say and he has been saying a lot in recent years, things that make a lot of people nervous. So what has he been talking about that is upsetting some of the general public and fellow scientists? Well these are things that would have been a lot more upsetting years ago, but to which we are getting used to, thanks to cable and satellite tv and the science and history channels. The subject of his talks has been about how the Earth is due for a disaster. We have all seen those programs that show a huge chunk of rock heading for the Earth at an incredible speed. The narrator usually states that this is the same thing that happened to the Earth millions of years ago and wiped out almost all life on the planet. The next thing that you usually hear, is that there is just no way to stop something like this, then they go on to tell us about the early warning system that is in place to warn us if such a thing is headed our way.

Disaster Heading Our Way

Let me ask you this, you are all very intelligent people. What good is an early warning system that warns you about something that you can do nothing about? Maybe you would be better off not knowing about it? It seems to me that there is more here than meets the eye. Could it be that such a system of early warning would be put in place just to protect the rich and powerful of this planet? Perhaps this would not be a world destroying event, only one that would destroy most of the people, those powerful enough might be secreted away in expensive underground chambers where they could live for years at the opposite side of the globe, until things settle down again. I know it sounds crazy, but would it be the first time that the so called upper class looked out for themselves at the expense of everyone else? These chambers might exist in strategic locations around the world. Might this also be the reason to build a large Moon Base? I know that I am thinking very paranoid right now, but I am just trying to figure things our.

There are so many ways that the Earth could be destroyed, that it doesn't pay to worry about them. It does make sense however, to try and guard against what you have the technology for right now and that is the capability to destroy small asteroids headed this way. As we work on this technology, I am sure that the military will want to use it as a weapon. That is always the problem. The technology could be nuclear or laser or some other method that we develop like anti gravity, that doesn't matter. What matters is that we can move these things away from us. Blasting them into smaller chunks may not be too smart since many of the chunks might still strike the Earth. I am sure you know this already, anyone who has seen one of the many disaster movies has seen this scenario. I personally have always wondered if we had any secret craft capable of flying up to one of these things with a crew onboard and destroying it? There are so many rumors about secret spacecraft and such.

Earth A Planet Dying From Global Warming

Maybe we should be worrying more about the new particle collider that is going to be built and is so powerful that it will produce microscopic black hole on Earth? The scientists attached to the project tell us not to worry, the holes only last for a very tiny fraction of a second. Yeah, sure! First of all, I don't think that we have ever done this before, but I am not 100% sure. I am almost positive however. If that is true, how can anyone say with absolute certainty that the black holes will not just start sucking things in and getting stronger? The scientists base their opinion on something called evaporation time. Microscopic black holes are said to evaporate quickly. Would you want to bet the fate of the Earth on something like this, I know that I wouldn't? I think that it is just too dangerous to make a black hole even anywhere in the solar system or other ones close by. If the hole began to feed, it would eat what ever was nearest to it and maybe keep going, extending its monstrous gravity outward and sucking anything into it that it got near.

When Hawkings gave a speech in 2006, he pushed for space travel. Did he want us as humans to colonize other planets? No his reason for us going into space was quite different. He believes that it is only a matter of time before the Earth is destroyed and because of this, he believes that this is the only way to save the human race. Wow, this is pretty somber stuff. I guess life does look pretty bleak on this planet. Lets review the many ways that life here could be destroyed:
1. Global Warming could create a Mars like planet out of the Earth.
2. Nuclear war and nuclear contamination could render our planet uninhabitable.
3. All this fooling around with viruses, trying to make them into weapons, might create a virus that kills us all.
4. An asteroid or comet might hit the Earth and be of sufficient size to wipe us all out.
5. We might disrupt our atmosphere some way with some future weapon causing it to flow into space.
6. The creation of mini black holes might destroy us.
7. If we did get into a large nuclear war, we might force the Earth out of its orbit using powerful nuclear weapons.
8. As we develop more and more antimatter, we might have an accident and wipe ourselves out.
9. Several huge volcanic eruptions that block out the sun for years could destroy life.
10. Bringing back a killer virus from another planet, that is resistant to decontamination, on a probe or by an astronaut might finish us.

The disasters listed about are the only ones that came to mind, but I am sure there are plenty more. Today we have only developed a miniscule amount of anti matter, so I wouldn't worry too much about this one right now. There are other disasters that could occur, that while not Earth destroying, could kill millions of people, but I won't go into these now.

If Hawkings feels that the Earth is doomed, who am I to contradict him? He is not the only one that feels this way, many scientists have expressed the same feelings. There is another side to this coin however. There are many scientists who believe that we should be concentrating on trying to fix what is wrong, instead of just writing the Earth off. This assumes that not only can we repair what we have done to the planet, but that we can get people and countries to stop hating and fighting each other. I don't like to say this, but it seems to me that hate will always be there because religion and greed by big companies will always spark it. It is such a shame. If countries could only have the desire to control these monopolistic business that drain everyone's resources by charging inordinate prices, that would be the first step. As far as religious hatred, this has been with us from the beginning of time. I don't understand it and maybe much of it is caused because of the poor conditions that people have to live in, in some parts of the world. They think that the other guy has it better and hate him for it. Tribal hatred is just as bad. Look what happened in the former Yugoslavia. People that lived together for years, turned on each other and began to murder their neighbors. Could this ever be changed? I guess one can only hope.
