What Is Our Real Brain Power?

When people say that we only use 10% of our brains, that is merely a myth, an old wives' tale. We use most of our brain, but there are parts of it we don't understand. The average brain has about 100 trillion synaptic connections and somewhere between 50 to 100 billion neurons. I guess by these numbers you can see that we are talking about a very complicated organ. Our brains handle both conscious and unconscious duties. What I mean by that is we can think about and maybe solve a problem which would take conscious effort, while breathing and such is done on an unconscious level. I am not going into the everyday functions of the brain, that is for another time.

As advanced as we think that we are, we still don't understand everything about our brains. An example of this is we don't understand how information is coded, memories are stored and retrieved, simulating the future so we can respond to situations, where emotions come from, how our brains understand time, where our intelligence comes from, why the brain sleeps and dreams, how the brains systems integrate and even what consciousness is. There could be other things that we wouldn't understand if we knew what they were. If we all have approximately the same type of brain, why is it that some of us can be very intelligent and yet others have a low IQ?

We keep hearing about how we are evolving, but has anyone ever thought that maybe we have lost some brain powers from this? Does all this so called evolution, if it is really taking place, helping us, or can it sometimes dull some of our abilities. What we know is that we really don't know much when we talk about these things. There are some humans that seem to have abilities that are far greater than most of us. When we speak of abilities we are really talking about brains. Brains control abilities. Sure someone can workout for years with weights and become very strong, but that is not the type of ability I am talking about here. When we talk about the abilities that I mean, it depends what you believe before hand. For example it was said that Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet, had some sort of psychic ability and he filled hundreds of books with his predictions and never accepted any money for them. If these psychic abilities were real, then we might assume that his brain was either a little different from the normal brain, of course if we think that he was a fraud then none of this is true.

Did ancient man have abilities that we do not have today? When we look at some of the ancient structures that were built, it does make us wonder how it was done. Could it have been that ancient man just used more of his brain power to figure things out? Wouldn't that be a kick in the head, ancient people with a higher IQ than we have? If we took two people, one with an IQ of 80 and another with an IQ of 180, could the person with the higher IQ figure out problems that the person with the lower IQ could not? It does seem to be that way. I have read many papers on this subject and have seen where it was stressed that all things being equal in a certain scientific field, a scientist with a IQ of 180 was worth more to research than several scientists with an IQ of 150. There is no way to currently discover what the IQ was of deceased people, even if their bodies are found. Oh things can be said, like their brain was slightly bigger, but that really doesn't prove anything. When Einstein's brain was removed it was found that his parietal operculum region in the inferior frontal gyrus in the frontal lobe was absent along with a region called the lateral sulcus. What did all this mean? Einstein was unusual and I think you would have to call him a mutant, because of these empty areas it is postulated that his neurons could communicate better, thus giving him better and faster brain power.

What if Einstein's brain was more like those in ancient times? Would this help to explain how our ancestors were so good at some tasks that we find difficult today, like moving 200 ton stones? There are always so many theories about how ancient man survived against animals that were far stronger and more deadly, but we have to remember one thing, these are only theories. I have a couple of my own and they are:
1, That man is far older by hundreds of millions of years and may have predated those large animals and if man didn't come from another place (a different planet) he developed so long ago that by the time those large animals came along, he was able to protect himself with devices he had developed.
2. Man's brain may have been far more powerful than ours and maybe he was able to use it in such a way that he could escape from most animals.

Sure maybe to some people this sounds wild, but we have to be able to look at every possibility. I am only saying that these are possibilities no matter how slim they may be. There is another theory that in the very ancient times man was much closer to nature and had some abilities where he could actually control nature in a limited way. An example might be that ancient man could sense an earthquake before it happened like most wild animals and get out of the way of the eruption. Some theorize that ancient man had a much better sense of smell, maybe akin to a dog and incredible sight and hearing. If this is true than we have been slowly losing these abilities, why couldn't we also have lost some brain power?

There is some evidence that indicates that at least some ancient people tried to increase their brain power, such as the holy men in India for example, who would meditate for hours on end. Some people today believe in the law of attraction. The law of attraction states that if you believe hard enough that something will happen, it will. I do not subscribe to this myself but many do. Do we still have some hidden brain powers that we are unaware of?

The brain is complex and contrary to what science states, that learning how to speak really helped us as a society, maybe we would have been better off not speaking and developing telepathy? I guess we will never know if our brains are more capable now or were in the past, but it certainly is an interesting question.
