Marilyn Monroe was one of the most desired women of her time. She was beautiful and had a great personality. But Marilyn had a troubled life. She once said "Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul." It seemed that Marilyn could never be happy for a long period of time, this may have been due to the fact that it was said she was sexually abused as a child and had been moved to several homes and orphanages.

Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926. Her real name was Norma Jean Mortenson. She was born in Los Angeles, California. She later became Norma Jean Baker as Baker was her mother's maiden name. The first centerfold in Playboy was that of Marilyn. Marilyn's mother was in a sanitarium for years and released some years after her death. It was said she didn't remember who Marilyn was. In 1984 she died. Marilyn had three husbands during her lifetime, the first was Jim Dougherty who she married when she was sixteen, he was her guardian. They divorced in 1946. It may have been a marriage of convenience so Marilyn didn't have to go to an orphanage. Her second husband was Joe DiMaggio. This was a very short term marriage of only nine months. Joe wanted children and wanted Marilyn to give up her career which she didn't want to do. It is said that some of the pictures she was posing for upset Joe who was a conservative person. Her third and final marriage was to Arthur Miller. J. Edgar Hoover felt that Miller was a communist and had the couple under constant surveillance. When Marilyn died, Joe DiMaggio took over the funeral arrangements and didn't allow any Hollywood personalities to attend The Kennedys were also barred. Joe placed roses three times a week on Marilyn's grave for over twenty years.

There have been many stories stating that Marilyn and John F. Kennedy were having an affair. Some stories indicate that he got tired of her and passed her off to his brother Edward. Although we read about this everywhere, we can never be completely sure of it's validity. Marilyn did die a tragic death however. Here was a woman, a fragile woman, who practically owned Hollywood, yet she was pronounced a suicide.

Marilyn was found dead on August 5, 1962 in her Los Angeles home and she was only 36 years old. Next to her was a empty bottle which had contained pills for depression. She was lying face down on her bed, she was nude and had a telephone in her hand. Had she inherited a mental instability from her mother that caused her to kill herself? She was taking pills for depression. Many stories of Marilyn's life indicate that the depression she suffered, she had suffered all her life. The conspiracy theories abound about her death. Some say that Hoover had her murdered because Kennedy had told her too much about things she shouldn't have known. The fact that she sometimes went out with Johnny Roselli, a reputed Mafia figure didn't help either. These same conspiracy theorists claim that Roselli was bragging that he had friends in high places that were going to kill Kennedy.

Time has passed and there is no way to prove or disprove many of the statements concerning Marilyn and her death, but one thing is certain, Marilyn's death shocked a nation.
