Did you ever consider that the Earth is a mysterious place and there are many things on the Earth that science can't seem to fully explain? I don't intend to go into all of these things, but I would like to discuss megaliths. Megaliths are great stone structures. These structures seem to be found all over the world. They are ancient and seem to come in many different styles. In some cases the races that created them are long gone and there is no record of who they were or why the megaliths were built.

One of the most famous megaliths of all time is Stonehenge, in England.(Click Here for related article) Who built it and why has been guessed at for years but no one can really be certain. It may be a celestial calendar or a holy place that was formerly used by the Druids. The average weight for the upright stones is about 25 tons each. How were such heavy stones raised to stand upright? It makes one wonder if the ancients knew something about gravity that we do not know today. A modern megalith exists in Florida called the Coral Castle and was constructed by one man who was able to move large blocks of coral weighing many tons without any machinery. Did he discover the secrets of the ancients? Let's say that this structure is amazing, because it is! But there is more here than meets the eye. The stones that were placed on top of the standing stones formed a circle around the whole structure, but the way they were linked together was very sophisticated, the were linked with what is known as a dovetail joint. Archaeologists believe that there were other structures on this site before Stonehenge. It seems that this site had a very special meaning to the tribes of the area and the first buildings may have dated back as far as eight or nine thousand years B.C. The English countryside is dotted with many ancient structures and stone circles. There is a giant structure in Sardinia, Italy. This stone structure is a tomb with a massive upright slab that has a doorway cut into the bottom portion. The name of the site is the Coddu Vecchiu Giant's Tomb. It is believed to date back to 2300 B.C. The funny part about this building is that it is not the only one in Sardinia. The is another called Li Lolghi that is believed to be over 4500 years old. It is the largest of the so called giant's tombs. It was built around 1900 B.C. but was damaged by the Carthaginians about 1,000 years later.

Another famous group of megaliths are the giant statues on Easter Island. Scientists and civilians alike still wonder how could these huge, heavy statues have been carved and moved all around the island? The giant statues are called Moai. Some people actually believe that ancient ufo are responsible for the statues. A common theory is that the islanders ejp created the Moai created them for the volcanic rock of Rano Raraku. The theory goes on to propose that more and more of the trees were cleared so that the statues could be moved, thus destroying the island. The statues were not carved to look like any particular leader or chief, but it is believed that they did commemorate certain individuals. No other statues quite like them seem to have been found anywhere else in the world.

Megaliths exist in many places and in some places and countries that are not generally known for ancient ruins. One of these countries is Russia. Many areas in Russia contain prehistoric megaliths that a preservation movement is trying to save. In an area of many megaliths a project is being formed to establish an archaeological Park. The location is Russia, Gelendjik, Krasnadar area, Black Sea coast,  Zhane valley. This area contains many structures. Some were tombs others have no known function. They are mostly located in a12,000 square mile area that comprises Russia and Abkhazia. Many of the stones used were shaped into 90 degree angles. There are at least 3,000 known megalithic tombs known in this area. But this is not the final count. More and more of these structures are being found every day and there is no doubt that this area is a major source of these monuments.

One has to wonder, why were megaliths being constructed all over the world and how were the huge stones being lifted and moved? There are megaliths all over North, Central and South America. Some of these mysterious structures were built so perfectly that you can not fit a piece of paper between the stones. Some of the stones were carved in such a way that they interlocked into place without mortar. Stones weighing 20 tons were hauled up to the tops of mountains and used to construct huge structures. Again we see this impossible moving capacity show itself. Some of this movement would have been impossible today using the tools of modern technology, so what gives?

We may never discover the answer. Some say it was done by using thousands of people. This doesn't seem feasible for the mountain top buildings and the stone doesn't seem to come from the local area at the top. This is one of the great mysteries of the world.
