There is a ghost that many people have seen in the Chicago area since the 1930s, her name is Resurrection Mary. Legend has it that, in 1934, this beautiful blonde woman went to a dance at the O'Henry Ballroom and got into an argument with her boyfriend. The dance hall had been located on Archer Avenue and she began to hitchhike there. She was hit and killed by a hit and run driver between the O'Henry Ballroom and the main gate to Resurrection Cemetery. Mary’s family and friends, who lived in a close knit Polish community, mourned her passing and tried to move on. She was buried within the cemetery she died next to. For five years she laid at rest, buried in the very gown and dancing shoes she had died in. Soon after that event, people began to see a beautiful, blonde haired woman in a long white dress hitchhiking along Archer Avenue.

It all began when Jerry Palus. He lived on the south side of Chicago. In 1939 he was looking for a good time and picked up a beautiful blonde girl and danced with her all night. He had recalled that she felt a little strange since her skin was very cold. When the night was over she asked him for a ride home, and asked if he could pass Resurrection Cemetery. When they got to the cemetery she asked Jerry Palus to stop the car. She got out and headed toward the main gate of the cemetery and asked Jerry to remain where he was. As Jerry Palus watch she disappeared right in front of his eyes before reaching the main gate. At that point Mr. Palus became frightened and realized that he must have spent the evening with a ghost. He found out where Mary lived and visited her house. Mary's mother was there and told him Mary was dead. Her mother had a picture of her on the table and he recognized it at once, it was the girl with whom he had spent the night.

Another incident occurred in 1939. A young woman hailed a cab on Archer Avenue. It was snowing and she had no coat, only a white gown. She opened the door of the cab and sat next to the driver. As they rode along she pointed and told the driver to stop He turned his head for a second and when he turned back she was gone. She never opened the door. The cab had stopped in front of Resurrection Cemetery.

In 1977 a man was driving by the cemetery and saw a young girl who seemed to be locked in. She was holding on the the iron bars and she looked very frightened. He went to the nearest police station and returned with them to the cemetery. The girl was gone but two iron bars were bent and twisted and contained hand prints which seemed to be melted into the bars. The bars were removed and examined and it was found that it would take an incredible amount of heat to twist and bend these bars. The bars were reshaped, painted and put back but returned to their twisted and bent state along with the hand prints.

In 1978 a couple were driving down Archer Avenue when a young girl in a long white dress ran in front of their car. They tried to stop in time, but couldn't. Just as the car was about to make contact with the girl, it passed through her and she disappeared.

In August of 1980 sightings of Mary were rampant. She was seen by dozens of people. While driving to work a man saw the body of a woman lying in front of the main gate of Resurrection Cemetery. He checked and she was alive to he went to the police for help. When they got back, she was gone but the impression of her body was there. People had been flagging down police cars all day with sightings.

In September of 1980, a woman by the name of Claire Lopez Rudzincki was driving with some friends. The saw a figure all aglow walking on the grass. When they tried to get a better look their blood ran cold, the figure had no face, just a black hole.

Not everyone agrees with the details of the Resurrection Mary story. Some say she was a young girl that had been a passenger in a farm truck which was in an auto accident in front of the cemetery. She was killed and buried in the cemetery. A second story has Mary being Mary Miskowski, a young woman who was killed crossing the street, while going to a costume party. While yet a third story states she was Anna Mary Norkus. She had convinced her father to take her to the O'Henry Ballroom for her thirteenth birthday. On the way home the car overturned and she was killed. We may never know who Mary was in life but her story is fascinating.
