Fallout After The 2006 Election

I kept my word and wrote no more about politics, now the election is over and I would like to go over what happened. I know that everyone thinks that they already know everything about the election, but there may be some things I can tell you that might surprise you, or not. First of all we all heard the President say that individual elections were close but the total result was a thumpin. Here is a question for you, were the results really close and why was the president so confident that his party would win when all the polls showed otherwise?

I have to answer the question this way, the President knew something that we didn't and that was the fact that the Republicans tried very hard to get those voters that they thought would vote against them knocked off the voting register. Everyone thought that Virginia was a close race between Allen and Webb, but it is being said that huge amounts of voters were prevented from voting and they were mostly Webb votes, they were Democratic votes. This would have given Webb an overwhelming majority. Virginia was not the only state that this happened in. Sure the President was confident of victory. What the Republicans didn't count on was the fact that the vote was so overwhelming against them that the Democrats would still win. Oh and yes, there were also threatening phone calls to voters and this is now being investigated by the FBI. Is this anyway to conduct an election? In many states voters in heavily Democratic districts received phone calls telling them to vote in the wrong places. It is said that this happened in 20 congressional districts in New Jersey and throughout the country. Now get this, in Nebraska the voice of the Democratic congressional candidate was used when calling people several times per hour for hours on end to turn people against him. In Maryland it is said that ballots were passed out that had Republicans listed as Democrats. I could go on and on but this is sickening and those responsible should be put in jail.

The Vice President, Dick Cheney occupies a very plush office. It is said to be the best office in Washington and maybe even on a par with the oval office. There is a problem with this office however. The office belongs to the head of the House Ways and Means Committee, the most powerful committee in the House. The Republican head of this committee was reduced to having a basement office and didn't dare complain. There is going to be a new head of this Committee, thanks to the elections and this is Charlie Rangel from New York, a longtime member of the House. When asked what was one of the first things he was going to do when he takes over this committee, he said that he was going to get his office back. Ouch, Mr. Vice President.

Senator Hillary Clinton is said to have spent over $30,000,000 on her reelection even though everyone agreed that she would win. It is getting to look more and more like she will run for president. In a recent poll that asked voters who they would vote for, for president, Sen. Clinton or Sen. John McCain, Clinton won by a wide margin.

Here is something that gets me. When the Republicans were in power in the House, they did things like turn out the lights when Democrats were meeting. This was shown on television. They ignored the Democrats in most cases and did many things without consulting with them. Hey these Democrats were still the elected officials representing some U.S. citizens, so by ignoring them, they were ignoring the desires of citizens of this country. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they are falling all over themselves saying they want to cooperate with the Democrats. Does anyone feel that this is just a ploy because THEY don't want to get shut out of the process and if they had a chance, they would do it all over again? Apparently the people in this country were getting very tired of the corruption, 19 Republicans involved in scandals or so I am told, the war in Iraq and the out of control spending that has almost bankrupted this country, not to mention the fact that noting has been done for the middle class in 6 years, while the rich get much richer. Well it turned out that as important as same sex marriage and stem cell research are, they were not the main issues of this election.

Some of the tremendous pork barrel projects that have been passed by this Congress are going to be looked into with an eye to stopping them. I heard that one of the first things that will be stopped is the construction of a bridge that had 320 million dollars allotted for it's construction. It is know in political circles as the bridge to nowhere. It connects a small town in Alaska to an airport that is in a town of 50 people. This was tacked on to the highway bill and passed. The bridge has become an object of ridicule. Some people in Alaska are so embarrassed by this bridge that you can read their angry letters in the local papers.

Let's hope that laws are passed that will increase the punishment for those found guilty of dirty election tricks. Let's also hope that somehow we will be able to vote out those people that are still in that let this happen. It doesn't matter if their replacements are Republicans or Democrats, what matters is that they have morals. Let's hope that we get more honesty in government, after all, isn't that the most important thing? It is the duty of the government to work for the people that elected the officers of our government, not the companies looking to suck our country dry like some giant corporate vampire.

What was the most upsetting aspect of this election? It was the fact that the Republican party seemed to have a coordinated effort to commit fraud on the American voters. I am sure that most Republicans are just as sickened as I am about this fact. If the fraud of these phone calls were even only in one state then you could say it was only a few people responsible for what happened, but folks, it happened all over the country, which means that hundreds and maybe even thousands of people were committing these crimes. I think that unless the conspirators are found and put in jail, the current group of Republican lawmakers will never be fully trusted again. Something has to be done to mend the Republican party and throw out those criminals that seem to be setting policy. There is no way that those in power could not have known what was going on during election time. We can't be fooled when these people make nice e nice, because given the chance, they would be repeat performers since they have no conscience.

I am proud once again to be an American and see that the majority of my fellow voters feel the same way I do. I think that there was more joy around the world after the election results came in than we have seen in quite a while. Anyone could see that the President was quite angry especially at the people that formulated the Republican campaign, like Karl Rove. This was evident when he said something to the effect that he worked harder on the election than Rove did. As for Rumsfeld leaving office, there is a rumor that he was going to get the boot just before 9/11 happened and that is what saved him.
