Using Your Worry Space Wisely

Human beings, boy are we a strange bunch of creatures. We seem to worry about the wrong things and dwell on disaster. The history Channel has made a living by showing how we are all going to die from one disaster or another. They have given us a real smorgasbord of disasters that they claim that are just waiting to wipe us out. There are so many that I don't know which one to worry about first? How do I protect myself from a huge rock that is traveling through space at thousands of miles an hour and heading towards where I live? What about those huge waves that are going to be 200 or 300 feet high that are about to engulf my island. I could worry about that piece of land that is going to slide into the ocean and flood low lying lands, or what about old faithful that is scheduled for such a large eruption that it will blanket the earth, cutting down the sunlight and sending us back into the Ice Age? Then there are all those volcanoes, they are all around the Pacific rim which takes in a huge chunk of the world's area. They are said to be very active and just waiting to explode. That big earthquake could hit us at any time, according to the pundits. Not only is the west coast threatened, but we have been told that places like New York have built nuclear facilities right over the huge fault lines. This enables us to not only worry about the earthquake but about nuclear fallout, it is sort of a double disaster. We could worry about global warming and how all the icecaps are melting and the fresh water is drying up, but maybe you are tired of worrying about this, after all we have been worrying about this for years now. Pollution is a good thing to worry about, there is certainly enough of it around. All those new emerging industrial nations are really pumping this stuff out. The funny part of this is that the good old US of A. is still dumping more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any other nation on earth.

I heard a good one the other day, a scientist was telling everybody that we should be worried about exploding stars that are too close to our solar system, because the x-rays and cosmic rays could turn the planet lifeless. Now I ask you, why in the world would anybody want to worry about something like this? If you thought you had no control over things like hurtling asteroids, how much less control would you have over stars that explode? Why can't this guy see that this is a colossal waste of worrying time? I know that I am too busy worrying about the price of oil for heating my home to worry about exploding stars, what about you? I guess we could use all of our worry time for worrying about terrorist attacks, I am sure most of us have worried about this for a while now, but at least we just might be able to do something about this problem, although it certainly is an elusive one. We could worry about our drinking water, we are now constantly being told that we shouldn't drink bottled water because in some cases it is too pure. It seems we are now being told that we need some of the dirt and bacteria in all water to keep up our immune system. Overpopulation is something else we could worry about. It is said that at the current rate the human race is reproducing at, in less than a hundred years or so we will not be able to support everybody on this planet using just the planet's resources.

Some of us have been told that we shouldn't stay out in the sun too long and when we go out we should use all sorts of sun blockers. Some scientists have now stated that some sun blockers don't actually block all the rays of the sun and we should worry about what we are using. This means we now have to make a little more worry space for this problem. I don't know about you, but I have run out of worry space a long time ago. Trying to cram all this into my worry space has caused me to lose the significance of it all. Now when people say to me wow, look at this problem, or look at that problem, aren't you worried? I usually reply, "absolutely not." Another answer that I like to give is that I no longer worry about things that I have no control over, such as wars, disasters or even my own longevity. What is the sense of all this worry, it certainly doesn't help anybody and it doesn't increase anyone's chances of surviving a disaster, because we don't even know where such a thing would take place.

I guess we could worry about food disasters, there are certainly plenty of them going around lately. We could worry about getting mad cow disease from chop meat, it is said that there are hundreds of cases of this every year now in the United States. We could also worry about getting botulism, look how much food has been recalled for being tainted lately. We could even worry about foreign objects in our food. The other day I opened a fresh bottle of a famous brand of ketchup and there was something very strange inside of it, which I didn't want to know about, so I immediately got rid of the bottle. This was not the first time that a strange object has appeared inside of a bottle of something that I have purchased to either eat or drink. Years ago I purchased a famous brand of a soft drink and inside of it was a bottle brush that had broken off from the machine. My uncle found something a lot more distasteful in a bottle of soda and that was a dead mouse. So you see we could worry about this if we really wanted to. Another thing that we could worry about is the disappearance of topsoil. Much of the topsoil in the farmlands of this country is being eroded. Will this effect our crop production in the future? Some people are beginning to worry about sinkholes. These large holes are opening up in the earth near or under some homes. I was told by a person that this is a great worry. I replied, "okay".

Disease is everywhere. I guess I can excuse someone for worrying about this, especially if there is a history of it in their family. Maybe this is one of the true worries that we should make room for. The reason I say this is that sometimes there are preventive measures available to lessen the chances of getting some of these diseases, especially if they are inherited. Some of the new gene therapies can help. .It seems that there are a certain amount of people out there that are now worrying about predictions. They worry about what Nostradamus had to say, they worry about what Edgar Cayce had to say and they worry about what the astrologers have to say. While that is just too much worrying for me, I am sorry. First of all a lot of these predictions are such gibberish that they could mean anything. Why should I worry about something, when I don't even know what the heck the prophet was talking about? Sure there are some people out there that say they know exactly what he was talking about, to these people I have to say, get a life and get some common sense. Looking at a prediction from Nostradamus and matching something that happened after the prediction to it and saying this is what the prediction meant, is just plain crazy. I hope that I am not offending anybody out there, but I do believe that I am allowed to express my point of view as are you.

It seems to me that using the disaster scare, is no way to make money. What I mean by this is that constantly telling us in TV shows, that we are about to be obliterated is not my idea of entertainment. I guess there are people out there that are such worriers that they have to tune in to every disaster show, but to these people I have to say that you would feel much better if you didn't constantly look at these things. Somebody once said to me that I should worry about the world ending and I replied, "when you die that is the end of the world for you and it won't matter to you even if the planet is destroyed after that.you probably won't know about it" .What I meant was that our little world ends when we do, so why worry about something that is going to happen down the road, unless we have some amount of control over stopping it? This type of worry just makes no sense to me. So I have to say to everybody out there, enjoy yourselves, enjoy your family, get together with your friends whenever you can and enjoy whatever time on earth God has given you, and for goodness sake stop watching all those disaster shows.
