Quotable Quotes From Famous People
Sometimes you just can't help but admire something that some person has said. We have no way of knowing much that has been said by ordinary people, but famous ones have left a trail of quotes, some of which are quite clever. As I was looking through some of these, I couldn't help but feel that some of them should be restated, because they are just too good to ignore. George Patton Jr. was a crusty, general who won fame in World War II. He was almost court marshaled for slapping a soldier who was in a hospital for battle fatigue, an ailment that Patton didn't believe existed. He thought the man was a coward. One of his most notable quotes was "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." Here is another quote from the general, one that I particularly like, "Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way. " Lastly I would like to show you this quote, "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. " Jay Leno is a comedian that appears nightly on tv. This doesn't mean that he doesn't have some clever quotes. In this case I guess they would be more like short jokes, but good, never the less. Here is a quote from the comedian, " The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn't for any religious reasons. They couldn't find three wise men and a virgin." Lets see what another comedian has left us with. Woody Allen was very popular in movies about 20 years ago or more and had a lot of clever things to say. Here are some of them. " I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose." " And my parents finally realize that I'm kidnapped and they snap into action immediately: They rent out my room." Ok These quotes are not exactly memorable, maybe we better check out Yogi Berra. Yogi was a famous baseball player and manager and always had something clever to say. "This is like deja vu all over again." While watching a Steve McQueen movie he said, "He must have made that before he died." Talking about traveling he said, "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there." I know I am devoting a lot of space to Yogi, but his quotes are sooooo good! Again on travel, "I knew I was going to take the wrong train, so I left early." He loves baseball and here is what he has to say about it, "Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical.". Lastly when he was discussing a party he went to he said, "It was impossible to get a conversation going; everybody was talking too much." Do you remember the great tennis player Arthur Ashe? He said a couple of things that were memorable and here they are,"From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.", "Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome. Not everyone can be Number 1." Brigham Young was a Mormon Leader and pioneer. He had some interesting opinions on things. He said, " Any young man who is unmarried at the age of twenty one is a menace to the community." By the way, he had many wives. He also said, "Remember, a chip on the shoulder is a sure sign of wood higher up.", "It is wise for us to forget our troubles, there are always new ones to replace them." Sir Alfred Joseph Hichcock, the great director of mystery movies had some interesting things to say. " I never said all actors are cattle; what I said was all actors should be treated like cattle.", "TV has brought murder back into the home where it belongs." When referring to books he also said, "This paperback is very interesting, but I find it will never replace a hardcover book -- it makes a very poor doorstop." George Carlin is a very clever comedian and always has something interesting to say. Think about this for a second, " "I am" is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that "I do" is the longest sentence?" Regarding older people, "I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me . . they're cramming for their final exam." Here are some more interesting things he had to say, "If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?", "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac? ", “The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live”, Here is a gem by former President Richard Nixon, "Sure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too." , Here is another one, "When the president does it, that means it is not illegal." and finally, "You can't depend on the man who made the mess to clean it up." Johnny Carson was, at one time, was one of the most popular people on tv, here is what he had to say, "Democracy means that anyone can grow up to be president, and anyone who doesn't grow up can be vice president.", "If it weren't for Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of television, we'd still be eating frozen radio dinners.", "If life was fair, Elvis would be alive and all the impersonators would be dead.","For three days after death hair and fingernails continue to grow but phone calls taper off.", Arthur Miller the playwright said, "Everybody likes a kidder, but nobody lends him money." Winston Churchill, former prime minister of England had these things to say,"* A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.", " A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.", "If you are going through hell, keep going. ", "A politician needs the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn't happen ", " Difficulties mastered are opportunities won.", "History will be kind to me for I intend to write it." Colin Powell was the former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, former National Security Advisor and former Secretary of State. He had some interesting to say, " 90% of my time is spent on 10% of the world.", "Bad news isn't wine. It doesn't improve with age.", Experts often possess more data than judgment.", The genius Albert Einstein also said some notable things, " Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.", "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.", "Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing.", "Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value." and finally, "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." George Bernard Shaw was a very interesting person. He was an Irish playwright and Nobel Prize winner. He said, " The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.", "There is no sincerer love than the love of food.", " Love is the gross exaggeration of the difference between one person and everyone else.","Great Britain and the United States are nations separated by a common language.","He knows nothing and thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career.","Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children." I guess we couldn't talk about famous quotes without including Benjamin Franklin, " Beware of small expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.", "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that's the stuff life is made of.", "Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame.", "Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.", "Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.", " Wise men don't need advice. Fools won't take it.", "Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, and half-shut afterwards.", "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.", "He that won't be counseled can't be helped." , "A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over." I would like to finish up with some quotes by Leo, Tolstoy, the famous Russian novelist, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.", "Historians are like deaf people who go on answering questions that no one has asked them.", "In the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.", "Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold.", "History would be wonderful thing - if it were only true." I hope you enjoyed these quotes, they really come in handy at parties and such. I tried to present a very diversified collection. |
