Those Other Pyramids
When pyramids are spoken about, the picture that everyone gets in their mind is of the great pyramid at Giza, or possibly of an Aztec pyramid. Somehow the great pyramid has captured the imagination of people all over the world. I guess that is because it is such a spectacular monument and its proportions defy logic. One has to remember that this structure was the biggest and tallest one in the world for thousands of years. The symbol of it appears in many different places. Some say that the pyramid represented on the back of the US one dollar bill is actually the great pyramid. The funny thing about pyramids is that there are a lot more pyramids than most people suspect and they are not even in Egypt, where quite a few pyramids were built. Those other pyramids in Egypt just don't seem to capture our imagination the way the great one does. The following is a list of the other Egyptian Pyramids:
Some of the pyramids on the list don't even look like pyramids anymore. A good example of this is the Djedefre pyramid which looks more like a mound now. Others look like just a pyramid base such as the layered pyramid at Zawiyet el-Aryan. It almost looks like it was going to be a traditional pyramid, then construction was stopped. There are pyramids that look almost finished like the Neferirkare pyramid. It has a traditional pyramid shape and yet, somehow has an unfinished look to it. Then there are pyramids that look like wrecks and one of these is the Raneferef pyramid. Step pyramids were also built and we can find one when we look at the Pyramid of Djoser. The Medium Pyramid that is believed to have been built by Sneferu is a strange pyramid, because it rises up and is a standard pyramid for about 2/3 of the height of the pyramid, but then has a smaller structure on top. Some pyramids look like rocks in the desert, like those structures that you see out west in our deserts. There are very few Egyptian pyramids that look like pyramids and none of the excellence of the 3 big pyramids in Giza All The Pyramids At Giza, Egypt Yes the world is full of pyramids and it is interesting to look at some of the others. We all know that there are pyramids in Mexico and here is a photo of one of the most famous, the Great Pyramid of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla Photo Source: GNU_Free_Documentation_License Notice how new this pyramid looks. I couldn't help but notice what great condition it was in. When one thinks of ancient Rome, they don't usually think of pyramid builders, but there happens to be an ancient pyramid that is in Rome and has been there for about 2,000 years. It is known as the Roma-Piramide-cestia or Pyramid of Cestius. This pyramid is 27 meters high and was built in the first century BC. There is another Roman pyramid called Meta Romuli that was built, but it was destroyed in the 15th century. Even the country of Greece has its own pyramids, but this one looks more like some of the failed ones in Egypt. Was it a half-finished pyramid, a wrecked pyramid or just built as the bottom of a pyramid? Pyramid in Hellinkon, Greece There are several structures in Greece that are thought to be pyramids. They may not look like finished pyramids, but ancient travelers described them as such in their writings. Some far-eastern temples were even built with their version of of a pyramid, which is much more stylistic, such as the temple below. The building of pyramids has continued to this day. There is a famous pyramid made of glass outside the Louvre Museum in France. Below is a photo of a glass pyramid in Turkey. Photo Source: GNU_Free_Documentation_License The United States is not without its pyramids either. Below I have shown a few examples. Luxor pyramid in Las Vegas, Nevada Walter Pyramid, Long Beach, California Pyramid Arena in Memphis, Tennessee There is no doubt that there is just something that fascinates us about pyramids, I don't know what it is, but I can guess. I think that it is somehow connected to ancient mysticism. We think of the pyramids as secret places where ancient and forgotten magical ceremonies took place and this has sort of been engrained into our minds. Am I right? What do you think of when you see a photo of a pyramid? |
