Ancient Creation Legends
The older countries have the best creation legends, so I decided to do a little research and here is what I came up with:
Graphic Source: Greenstreet CD Egypt - Ra was the sun god. It is said that he rose from the mists over the water and Nun, the spirit of the waters, floated above him. Ra supposedly was all powerful and this was because he had a secret name and that gave him the power to create something by calling its name. Here is how he made the sun travel across the sky, he said "I am Khepera at the dawn, Ra at noon and Tum in the evening.". This made the sun rise in the east and travel across the sky and set in the west. He created the first day. When he did this, he then named Shu as the keeper of the wind and Tefnut the rainmaker. He said the name Geb and this made the Earth rise from the sea. When he said the name Nut she stretched her body across the sky. This formed the arch that held the stars and made a path for the sun and moon. He named man and woman and the last thing Ra named was Hapi and this brought the river Nile to Egypt. That is how everything originated.
Graphic Source: Greenstreet CD China - In the beginning the universe was a big black egg and inside that egg was Pan Gu. This existed for 18,000 years until he finally woke. When he woke, he chopped his way out of the egg with an ax. The light part of the egg floated up and formed the heavens. while the cold turbulent matter stayed below to form the Earth. When Pan Gu stood, his head touched the sky and his feet were on the Earth. The heavens and Earth began to grow at 10 feet per day and so did Pan Gu. This went on for another 18,000 years. Pan Gu stood between the sky and the Earth so that they could never join again. Pan Gu finally died and his breath became the clouds and the wind. His voice was the thunder. One of his eyes became the Sun and the other eye became the Moon. His body, along with his arms and legs, became 5 big mountains and the water was formed by his blood. Land was formed from his muscles and roads from his veins. The stars came from his beard and hair and his skin and fine body hairs formed the trees and flowers. Jade and pearls were formed from his marrow. His seed nurtured all things on Earth. There are some versions of this legend that are slightly different and one states that his fleas and lice became us. Ouch!
Graphic Source: Greenstreet CD Greece - There are a few different ancient Greek legends of the creation of the Earth. Here is the one about Uranos and Gaia. Uranos was the sky and Gala was the Earth. Sky was the first who ruled over the entire world and he wedded Earth. He begat first the Hundred-handed. Then Earth bore him the Cyclopes. Then Sky bound and cast into Tartarus and he begat children to Earth, they were the Titans. Earth grieved at the destruction of her children, who had been cast into Tartarus. - Apollodorus. This passage is confusing due to the translation, but I think that most of us can get the general meaning of it. To me it means that First there was the sky and then the Earth. The first creatures had hundreds of hands and next the Cyclopes was created. Tartarus was hell to the ancient Greeks, so it seems that the Cyclopes were cast into hell and then the Earth bore children, but they were the Titans which were the gods before the Olympians and their rules was Cronus. This tale seems to end before the creation of the Olympian gods and the human race.
Graphic Source: Simplymedia Norse - The Norse creation legend is one of the most complicated, but I will do the best I can. Muspell was the very first world to exist. It was like hell, but those that were native to it could endure it. Surt sat at the border to this land and guarded it with a flaming sword. When the world ends he will kill all the gods and burn the world. Beyond this land was a huge void and its name was Ginnungagap and beyond that, there was a very dark and cold land named Niflheim. This was a place that emanated extreme cold along with frost, ice, wind and rain. When this stuff traveled back to Ginnungagap it was met with warm air, light and warm air from Muspell. Where the heat and cold met, this caused drops and running fluid that created the giant frost ogre named Ymir. As Ymir slept he began to sweat. Under his left arm a man and woman grew. One of his legs begot a son and this is where the race of frost ogres came from. Some of the thawing frost became a cow named Audhumla; Four rivers of milk ran from her to feed Ymir. Buri, a tall strong and handsome man was freed from the ice by a Audhumia the cow who licked the salty ice blocks. The man had a son named Bor and Bor married Bestla, the giant's daughter. They had three sons and Odin was the first, while Vili and Ve were the second and third. Ymir was killed by Odin, Vili and Ve. When Ymir was killed so much blood came out of him that all the frost ogres were drowned except for Bergelmir and his wife. These two frost ogres were responsible for many families of frost ogres being born. The world was made when the three sons of Bor carried Ymir to the middle of Ginnungagap. The waters were made from his blood, from his skin the Earth, from his hair the trees and his bones formed the mountains. The rocks came from his broken bones, teeth and jaw and so did the pebbles. Ymir's skull made the sky and his brains the clouds. Humans came from the maggots that appeared in Ymir's flesh. They were given human understanding and that is where we came from. The three brothers took the sparks and embers from Muspell and placed them in Ginnungagap to light heaven and Earth. There are different versions of this story.
Graphic Source: Clipart.com Persia - There were two spirits that existed in eternity and neither knew of the other. One was Ahura-Mazda also known as Ormuzd and he was the Spirit of Good. He fostered legions of good and beautiful angels and archangels. The other spirit was Ahriman, he was also the Spirit of Good. Ormuzd created the light and immediately Ahriman became aware of his existence and became jealous of his power. Ahriman turned from the good and became the Spirit of Evil. Ormuzd created the Earth and Ahriman entered into its grosser elements. For every good thing that Ormuzd did, Ahriman made sure to enter an evil element into it. When Ormuzd created the human race, Ahriman entered the humans and both spirits, that of good and that of evil, struggle for control. For the first 3,000 years man was ruled by Ormuzd with wisdom until the power of Ahriman took hold. This is to continue for 3,000 years also and then good will return and evil and death will be vanquished and the evil spirit of Ahriman will be made to kneel before Ormuzd. It is felt that this creation legend was written after the Persians invaded Italy in the first century and that they borrowed some material from the early Christians.
Graphic Source: WiseGorilla Aztec - Coatique was the Lady of the Skirt of Snakes and the mother of creation. She was created in the image of the unknown. She is perfect. Coatique was impregnated by an obsidian knife and gave birth to Coyolxanuhqui, the goddess of the moon and also a group of males. She found a ball of feathers and tucked it to her bosom, but it got lost. She then realized that she was pregnant again, but her children, the moon and stars didn't believe her. They became ashamed of her and decided to kill her. The reason for this was they believed that a goddess can only give birth once to gods and no more. Before her children could kill her, she bore the fiery god of war, Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli, with the help of a fire serpent, killed his brothers and sister. He beheaded Coyolxanuhqui and threw her body into a deep gorge where it lays dismembered forever. The heavens crumbled to pieces, the earth mother fell and was fertilized and her children were torn apart and then scattered throughout the universe. Wow, some of these creation legends are truly violent, especially the Aztec one. There are some similarities between some of them. Could it be that some legends borrowed things from other legends? I guess this could be a possibility, anyway it is always interesting to see what ancient people thought. |
