Picture the stones that comprise Stonehenge. Now picture hundreds or even thousands of these babies made into a complete temple. Sounds outrageous, doesn't it? Well it exists. All one has to do is go to the island of Malta to see several examples of this kind of temple building. A very good example is Ħaġar Qim, pronounced ha-jar-eem, where the stones were put together in such a way that they composed a building with a doorway. This building dates back to somewhere around 3,200 B.C. Here is that same old mystery again. Ancient people from before the invention of even the wheel, were able to move stones that we would find hard or impossible to move today. This mystery of stone moving has persisted in the ancient world and leaves us today with a very big mystery. Looking at some of the stones, I can't help but wonder how such a large temple was built. A layer of these huge stones was laid at the front of the building, on their sides. Stones that seem to have been cut to size make up the walls. I bet there isn't a stone in the bunch that weighs less than 8 tons with some twice that size with a few that might even top 100 tons..

Right: Front entrance of temple

One can not help but be impressed with these ruins, especially when the age of them is considered. Notice the fine stone work on the front entrance The stones fit together quite well, showing a degree of stone mason type professionalism. As big as these stones are, you haven't seen anything yet. If one goes to the Northern part of Italy, he or she will see standing stones that are very similar to those on Malta. If you think that 3200 B.C. was quite a long time ago for temple building you are right, but temple building on Malta started even further back. It is guessed that it started in 4,100 B.C. in what is known as the Zebbug phase. Some archeologists dispute this date and say that the temple building phase began around 3,500 B.C. The period known as the Temple Period on Malta was said to have ended at 2,500 B.C., this was just at the start of the Bronze Age. One can say that the Temple Period probably lasted about 1600 years on Malta.

Carved Stone

I find the above pictured stone incredible. You are looking at a stone that makes up part of the temple that someone carved out by hand, using other stone tools. I am sure that there will be those that will credit the aliens with this, but believe me, it was done by a patient worker who probably had a stone hammer and some sort of stone chisel. What I find truly unique about it is that it is carved from the center of one stone. The Egyptians of old had methods for carving rock, but it was usually to cut out shapes such as an obelisk. Cutting out a large rectangle out of the stone without cracking it was quite a feat for those times. Many people couldn't do it today with modern tools.

Huge stone that must weigh over 120 tons

The stone picture above really takes the cake. It was moved to form part of the wall of the temple and must weigh at least 120 tons or their abouts. Now tell me how this could have possibly been moved and stood up. When the Egyptians erected giant obelisks, they dug a hole and filled it with sand. They then dragged the obelisk. over it and let the sand out and the stone would gradually stand on its own. They would then fill in the missing sand when the stone was standing. This stone doesn't seem to have been handled that way. How could it have been raised? There is certainly more here than meets the eye. Even the stones next to the very large one are huge and you would think that they were not moveable by Neolithic technology.

More huge stone set in the walls of the temple

This entire temple is a work of huge stones. Notice the huge stones that are built into the wall to the left side of the entrance. It was like these people were moving mountains, well maybe not quite that much, but you get the idea. It would be interesting to know how long the construction of this temple took and how many people were used. We have to remember that this is Malta and I don't think it had a large population at the time. An interesting fact is that this temple is over 1,000 years older than the pyramids. The population on Malta has been traced back to about 5,000 B.C. The temple builders disappeared and their secrets left with them.

Bored stones

Look at the stones, you will notice a rock that has been bored out, or carved out, whatever the case may be. It has also been shaped into an alter leg. If you look at the middle left of the photo you will see it. The top of the altar is broken so there will not be a full top visible. Another interesting feature is the fact that you can see an identical rock parallel to it. There stones were carved to be identical and to be used as the stands for the altar top. I don't know why the holes were made in the stands, maybe they were for the insertion of shelves. You also get a good view of the inside walls of the temple.

Inner Chamber

Notice that the inner chamber has much finer stone work in parts. This type of stone construction is reminiscent of some of the construction in South America. The stones give the impression that they weren't just taken and placed where they are, they were carved first to make them uniform. Who were these people that were capable of such feats of building? It seems that many great races of builders have just disappeared from this Earth and since no written records existed, we know next to nothing about them. We are talking about a time when Egyptian hieroglyphics were just being invented.

In modern times we have the mystery of the Coral Castle in Florida, another building that was built by only one person and made from 20 ton blocks of coral. The guy had only a block and tackle, which makes the entire chore impossible. To add insult to injury, he moved the entire complex to another area, at night, by truck, by himself. Another impossible task. Did this fellow learn the ancient trick for giant stone moving? We are constantly finding out that the ancients knew more than we give them credit for. Could it be that they knew a few things that we still don't? Is that such an impossible idea?
