World Wonders

There are many world wonders, some are called the wonders of the ancient world, some are called natural wonders, some are called underwater wonders and so on. Lets take a look at ancient and old world wonders, some of which I am sure we are quite familiar with.

The Classic ancient wonders are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:

The Great Pyramid of Giza is still there in all its glory. Located in the city of Giza which is part of greater Cairo in Egypt. It was built around 2560 BC and is about 4,565 years old.

The other six wonders of the ancient world are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The mausoleum at Helicanassus, The Colossus of Rhodes and The Pharos of Alexandria. You will notice that some of these wonders have disappeared over time.

There are quite a few other buildings and objects that are classified as wonders such as the Borboudur Temple. The temple is located in Central Java, just south of Magelang. It is thought that it might have been constructed in 842 AD.

Another world wonder is the biggest structure on earth, it is the Great Wall of China. It is though that the wall was built in many sections but not connected until the Qin Dynasty which was from 221-206 BC.

Hagia Sophia was the Church of the Holy Wisdom in the Orthodox faith To the Muslims it became Ayasofya Camii, Mosque of Holy Wisdom. This was the first great Byzantine Church, this church. It was constructed about 356 AD. When Sultan Mohammed II conquered Constantinople in 1453 he turned the church into a Mosque.

Stonehenge is also considered a world wonder. There is no doubt that this structure is very mysterious. There is also no doubt that much of this structure has been removed over the many thousands of years since its construction. It may have been built as a giant calendar or a place of worship. We may never know.

The Moai Statues on Easter Island are another wonder of the mysterious type. We can't even figure out how the statues were moved since that all are of massive weight. What do they represent? We have many questions but few answers.

The Aztec Temple built in 1487. It would have been built earlier but the Aztecs didn't have access to sufficient amounts of rock until then.

The Taj Mahal would have to be mentioned whenever one speaks of any world wonders. It is in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built as a mausoleum by a heart broken Emperor who's wife died in child birth. It is truly one of the most beautiful structures on earth.

In 1860 a French missionary discovered the temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It is believed that they date back to about 880 AD. These magnificent temples resemble traditional temples found in India and China but contain incredible statues and carvings.

There are so many wonders around the world that are not even named as wonders that it would be very hard to make a list, right now, of the greatest wonders. After all, what would we consider a wonder? Would the space shuttle qualify? How about the tunnel between England and France? Would the current tallest building in the world be a wonder? See what I mean? We would be torn between hundreds of things that could be wonders. But there is a list called the list of modern wonders, and here it is:

The Channel Tunnel
The CN Tower
The Empire State Building
The Golden Gate Bridge
Itapu Dam
Panama Canal
The Petronas Towers
Suez Canal
The Sydney Opera House
The Statue of Liberty
Mount Rushmore
Hoover Dam
The Gateway Arch
The Eiffel Tower
The Statue of Cristo Redentor
The Big Ben Clock Tower
Aswan Dam

You may agree or disagree or even feel that the list is incomplete, but for better or worse this is the agreed upon list. As time ticks on I am sure that a lot more wonders will be available to be added.
