Traveling Faster Than Light

Much has been said about Einstein's theory prohibiting anything from traveling faster than the speed of light. While this theory is widely accepted in the scientific community, there are intriguing indications that it may be possible to go faster than light speed. Tachyons are theoretical particles that travel faster than light and have imaginary mass. While this sounds like just so much scientific nonsense, it is a concept never the less. One might wonder how can a particle have an imaginary mass, I know that I did? What this really means is that the mass of a particle only becomes physically meaningful at speeds greater than light. Scientists have reason to believe that there are particles that exist that are tachyon like. If indeed they find evidence of the existence of these particles then the door is open to faster than light travel, because it will show that there are objects in nature that routinely break that barrier.

So how can we ever travel faster than the speed of light if Einstein's theory is wrong? We won't be able to do it using any of the energy sources available today, that is almost a certainty. Atomic power just doesn't give us enough energy and neither will matter - antimatter as seen on Startrek. So do we know of any energy source that might be capable of getting us up to and past the speed of light? We do know about one source, it is know as Zero Point Energy. It is so powerful that a very small amount of it could boil all the oceans in the world. If you take a box the size of one cubic centimeter and suck out every particle of matter you will have a vacuum. The vacuum will contain certain prosperities. The prosperities. of the vacuum will include particles and anti-particles that come into existence instantly and disappear instantly. This is where the energy comes from. The energy contained in this tiny box will be so powerful that it would make any other energy source look like nothing. Scientists were able to measure this source in 1997 so they know that it really exists.

This brings me to a recent article about ufos. According to one newspaper researchers have analyzed the comings and goings of ufos and have determined that some have actually broken the light speed barrier. If we assume that there are really ufos piloted by intelligent creatures from other worlds, the next assumption we would have to make is that they must either be capable of faster than light speeds, time travel or suspended animation. The reason that I say this is that we have to assume that intelligent life is not present in our solar system. If it were present it would have either contacted us or left some clues to its existence Of course there is another possibility and that is if life does exist in this solar system then it is not as technologically developed as us and if that is the case then my assumption still stands. Here we are, on the verge of tremendous scientific discoveries that pertain to manned space travel. Imagine beings that are already tens of thousands of years ahead of us in technology. If we know that something like Zero Point Energy exists than surely they have it already. Maybe the article in the newspaper is right and there are ufos zipping around at speeds thousands of times that of light.

Other theories state that once in space light can be accelerated far beyond its traditional speed of 186,000 miles per second. We have already showed that we can slow light down to a crawl so why wouldn't we eventually be able to speed it up? There are also other forms of matter that we do not yet understand such as dark matter. Maybe this dark matter might have properties conducive to the release of large amounts of energy. This must be studied. Some think that mind power might be enough to power our spaceship of the future, faster than light. I don't know how they come to this conclusion but they do and they cite some results from experiments that show that thought can move faster than light.

If we believe in extraterrestrial ufos then we must believe that they cover huge distances that would not be possible to cover without breaking the speed of light, or by hibernating the crew, or by turning back time in some manner. In the year 2,000 it was thought that we had broken the speed of light barrier. Even Nature magazine published an article stating that laser pulses had traveled faster than light. The scientific community was amazed, had Einstein been wrong? No, it turns out that certain parameters in the experiment were defined wrong. The definition of a laser pulse turned out to be a lot more complicated than first believed.

I say take heart all you amateur astronauts, we will travel faster than light someday. I remember when scientists thought that it was impossible to break the sound barrier. They also thought that radio was impossible to create. And remember this one, "Man will never fly"? We have consistently met every major goal that we have striven for. This is what makes us so great. We said that we would go to the moon and shortly after that, we did. We are capable of breaking the speed of light barrier and it is just a matter of time before we will.
